Breakout Chester – Vacancy

Vacancy

Breakout Chester

Venue: Breakout Chester

Room: Vacancy

The Team: TDM, D, M, L, GWNIDK

Date: 21/05/2017

So this was it – my first Escape Room!

I’d heard of them before and always intended to give one a go, but like a lot of things I’d just never got round to it, so I was extremely happy when a friend called to invite me along to one and set me on the path. Vacancy at Breakout Chester was the room that had been chosen which is listed as a 4 Star difficulty… so as novices we felt a bit like we’d thrown ourselves in at the deep end. At least I did.

The Story:
Exhausted after a long journey, you place your bag down on the freshly made bed, ready to relax. Suddenly, an ominous sixty minute countdown begins. No matter what you try, the door will not open. Welcome to the Crimson Lake Motel. You check in, but you NEVER check out…

The room itself is well themed – a hotel room, with everything you’d expect in such a place. There was a nice mix of searching and puzzles, and most importantly everything actually made sense to us. There were a couple of stumbling blocks we hit, one of which involved a password, which two of us managed to get wrong several times trying multiple variations of what we thought it was… only to go back to the first thing we’d both tried to find it was right after all. Clumsy fingers and panic I guess!

Clues were given via a TV screen which also displayed the countdown, but one thing to note is that the room didn’t have any microphones. Because of this I think it was a little difficult for the game host to tell exactly where we were up to, so we actually got clues for a couple of things we’d already done at one point. I think that mics may have been fitted since we did the room though (but not 100% sure of this).

Overall I thought this was a great room, and certainly served as a great introduction to Escape Rooms for me.

Result: Escaped in 40 minutes
